Challenge

There are residential buildings in the province of Başakşehir, İstanbul; reinforced concrete retaining walls collapsed caused by rain, due to the fact that drainage prevention didn’t applied. Behind the walls soil loss and erosion problems were occurred. Because of this reason, above the wall underneath the structure’s foundation level had been come out in the open.

Solution

In view of the difficulties and considering the ultimate performance of establishing a rigid retaining structure on the sloping backfill, designing a flexible retaining structure is the most suitable engineering solution. For this reason, a retaining wall using Gabion baskets having the size of 2x1x1m and produced from double twist wire were designed and constructed in two steps each having a height of 2m and 85m length.
