Slope Protection Works at Terrace Hill and Grotto Hill
Challenge
In Floridablanca, Pampanga, slopes near the Zambales mountain range are particularly prone to landslides, especially during the rainy season. The area is mainly composed of silty clays and clayey silts from weathered volcanic rocks, which absorb water easily but drain poorly, making the ground unstable when saturated. The main causes of this phenomenon are human activities such as excessive farming and deforestation, which reduce root support and disrupt natural water flow, increasing the risk of slope failure.
This situation highlights the urgent need for effective slope management in Floridablanca. Preventive measures such as reforestation, improved drainage systems, and slope reinforcement are essential to reduce the risk of future landslides and protect local communities.
Solution
To combat the risk of global failure, Ground Specialists Inc. sought the expertise of Maccaferri to protect a total slope area of 3,132 square meters. Rockfall netting, along with MacMat R, a geosynthetic mat, was installed and secured using steel anchors. These solutions provide active slope protection while also promoting natural vegetation growth. Together, they enhance both the stability and environmental recovery of the area
