Challenge

Maccaferri Pty Ltd was approached by Rail Infrastructure Corporation (RIC) for design assistance on an energy dissipater for a stormwater outfall. The preliminary design was a reinforced concrete USBR (United States Bureau of Reclamation) style dissipater. With time and budget constraints against RIC, Maccaferri had to act quickly to deliver a solution for their needs. A further requirement for RIC was that the design had to be certified.

Solution

Maccaferri engaged Cardno Willing Pty Ltd on behalf of RIC to design and certify a suitable energy dissipater. Cardno Willing determined that the USBR style dissipater was not appropriate for the hydraulic conditions of the site. As a result, Cardno Willing in conjunction with Maccaferri proposed a Gabion & Reno Mattress drop structure.

The final solution was vastly different from the original proposal, however, it was more cost effective and efficient.

RIC was very pleased with the outcome, in particularly with the installation. The contractor, Revegetation & Erosion Control carried out the project in accordance to the specifications and produced an aesthetically pleasing structure that will become a benchmark for future mesh projects to come.
