Reno Mattress Plus
Cost-effective riverbank hydraulic protection
Traditional riverbank protections, like rip-rap, require significant material due to imprecise placement and lack of confinement. Maccaferri’s mattress solutions—Reno Mattress Plus and RenoMac Plus—offer superior performance, reducing material use, costs, and environmental impact while ensuring durable and effective hydraulic protection.
Sustainable Engineering
Reno Mattress Plus and RenoMac Plus combine sustainability and performance. The PoliMac coating ensures exceptional durability, even in the most aggressive conditions, reducing maintenance and extending the product’s life cycle. Rigorously tested, it does not release harmful substances into water. By using natural stone, these solutions integrate seamlessly into aquatic environments, enhancing biodiversity. With over 70% less material usage compared to rip-rap, they deliver the same performance with a lower environmental footprint.
Reno Mattress Plus
Invented in the 1960s, Reno Mattress Plus has been continuously improved through decades of research and testing. In collaboration with Colorado State University, we have perfected its performance to deliver unmatched hydraulic protection. By minimizing material consumption, it cuts emissions by over 80% compared to rip-rap, making it an ideal solution for sustainable riverbank protection.

BOOTH ROAD CANALISATION
South Africa
With an anticipated 1:50 year flow volume of 500m³/s, the Booth Road Canal was expected to flood the main arterial road and surrounding residential areas. Critical velocities along the river course were expected to reach 4,79m/s. The construction of a formalised canal, with bank protection, was therefore necessary. An additional complication in the design was that the culvert downstream of the canal was smaller than the upstream culvert. A further concern was theft of the lids of the mattresses by the surrounding inhabitants.

CHLOORKOP EASTERN CANAL
South Africa
Chloorkop effluent farm is located approximately 10km east of Midrand and is operated by Sentrachem, a subsidiary of the DOW Chemical Company. In terms of the water regulations all “clean water” must be diverted around the farm. In order to comply with this regulation, river diversion canals on both the eastern and western sides redirect water around the property. Since the farm was originally established in the 1950’s, the residential development around the farm has increased resulting in additional run-off being channelled into the natural watercourse. To cater for the increased run-off quantities the existing eastern canal of the farm, whose purpose is to divert the natural river course past the salt-water dams into the spruit below, needed to be upgraded.

MHLANGA RIVER BRIDGE
South Africa
The gravel road which ran alongside the bridge abutments, was constructed to cater for the needs of the local community and for the transport of sugar cane. Sugar cane transportation was severely hampered, each time the fast flowing river flooded, causing the road to wash away.
