Challenge

The Pahang-Selangor Raw Water Transfer Project involves building twin pipelines that transfer water from Kelau River in Pahang to Langat River in Selangor. It is the longest raw water transfer tunnel in South East Asia, and the seventh in the world which is expected to be fully operational in 2017. When completed, it will have the capacity to channel 1.89 billion liters of water a day to consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya up until 2025.

Solution

The Kelau Dam is one of the major components of the project and it is located directly in the catchment and pond area. Gabions are required to be placed alongside the river and the pond to prevent erosion in the catchment areas. Gabions of 1.0m and 0.5m in height provided a sturdy structure to the total area of protection, covering approximately 17,000 m3. High quality gabions are necessary for this project to have longer life span of the protection.
