Landslide and debris flow containment
Maccaferri Debris Flow are designed to contain soil/water flows (debris flows) or shallow landslides on slopes, channels and chutes. The Debris Flow Barriers are customised to suit the dimensions of the project, the anticipated debris material and the expected volume of the flow. Upon impact by the debris flow, the Debris Flow Barrier progressively deforms with the compression brakes and systems absorbing the energy. The hydrostatic pressure within the flow rapidly dissipates once the debris flow has been arrested, leaving the volume of debris within the barrier.

DEBRIS FLOW BARRIER AT GUA MUSANG, KELANTAN. MALAYSIA
Malaysia
In 2008, an incident of debris flow with approximately 4,000m³ of mud soil had flowed down hill to highway of Sections 62-4 to 62-8 along Simpang Pulai Road (Laluan FT185) in Lojing, Gua Musang, Kelantan. The height from toe to the debris source was about 260m, with slope gradient ranged from 20°to 35°. It was anticipated that the risk of debris flow re-occurrence at the same location was high and estimated to be 5,000m³ in volume. Hence, the Authority was looking for engineered barriers to be installed along the anticipated flow path to retain or retard the debris flow, in order to minimize the risk of debris reaching the highway.

Lake Komani in Bajram Curri, Albania, was constantly threatened by debris flow from Lerini-Salca stream, growing this way the water level in the lake and giving the dam additional and artificial charges, also separating the lake in two parts. The strong water flows generated this way were creating difficulties for the ship which sail in the lake.

Romblon Deo Tablas Circumferential Road is a coastal road circum-navigating the island of Tablas, Province of Romblon. In the past, the road had suffered from temporary closures after heavy typhoons brought about by debris (logs and woods) that are carried by flood waters from the upland areas. These debris are the product of the clearing and cutting down of trees in the upland areas for cultivation purposes (a traditional but destructive agricultural system).
