Challenge

The Umm Qasr Port project required effective scour protection works along the quay wall, where strong currents, tidal variations, and vessel-induced hydraulic forces posed a significant risk of bed erosion and local instability. The main challenge was to install a durable and heavy-duty scour protection system in a constrained marine environment, adjacent to existing quay structures and piles, while ensuring accurate placement, construction safety, and long-term performance. Conventional loose rock solutions were difficult to control during installation and carried a higher risk of displacement under operational conditions.

Solution

Maccaferri proposed and supplied RenoMac® mattresses as a robust and engineered scour protection solution for the quay wall at Umm Qasr Port. The prefabricated RenoMac units, filled with graded stone, provided a high-mass, flexible, and erosion-resistant mattress capable of conforming to the seabed and protecting against local scour. The mattresses were installed using controlled lifting and positioning systems, allowing precise placement even in challenging site conditions and around existing structures. Once installed, the RenoMac system formed a continuous protective layer, effectively dissipating hydraulic forces and ensuring long-term stability and durability of the quay wall foundation in a demanding marine environment.
