Challenge

Following the failure of a railway cutting slope, a comprehensive geotechnical investigation identified multiple active slip surfaces in the vicinity of an existing retaining wall. This indicated widespread slope instability rather than a localised failure, posing a significant risk to the safety and operation of the adjacent rail infrastructure.

Due to the scale of the issue and the constraints of working within a live rail environment, full replacement of the retaining wall was deemed impractical, costly, and highly disruptive. Instead, a more efficient and less invasive slope stabilisation solution was required to address the instability while maintaining operational continuity.

The project involved stabilising approximately 200 linear metres of trackside slope, with varying heights ranging from 12 metres to 30 metres. The proposed design incorporated a soil nailing system to reinforce the slope mass, consisting of over 680 soil nails, each up to 6 metres in length. To ensure long-term stability and surface protection, a high-strength, high-stiffness steel mesh facing was required to work in combination with the soil nails.

Solution

Main contractor Volker Fitzpatrick partnered with Maccaferri to deliver an effective and reliable slope stabilisation system for the rail cutting. Maccaferri worked closely with the project designers to assess site conditions and engineering requirements, ultimately recommending Steelgrid HR30 as the optimal high-performance mesh solution.

Steelgrid HR30 is a high-strength steel wire mesh specifically designed for soil nailing and slope stabilisation applications. Its superior tensile strength and stiffness make it ideal for reinforcing steep slopes and supporting long-term ground stability in demanding environments such as railway infrastructure.

The mesh was installed using a regular anchorage pattern to ensure consistent load distribution across the slope face. In selected areas, Steelgrid HR30 was combined with a biodegradable erosion control mat, providing immediate erosion protection while enabling natural vegetation growth for sustainable long-term stabilisation.

Steelgrid HR30 delivered several key installation and performance benefits. Its design eliminates the need for overlapping mesh panels, reducing material use and simplifying installation. There is no requirement to form depressions around anchor plates, and the system does not require pre-tensioning, further accelerating construction. These advantages significantly reduced installation time, labour costs, and site disruption.

As a result, Steelgrid HR30 provided a fast, cost-effective, and durable slope stabilisation solution, making it ideally suited for this high-profile rail infrastructure project where efficiency, safety, and performance were critical.
